Voila!

IMG_1375IMG_1376The focus this week has been restoration of a vintage French bench.

Several parts were missing, so bring out the hand tools and voila.

Photo on right shows the replacement part installed and the original that was removed from the left side of the column.

Bench resurface, and a new start

Bench20 years ago I built this bench top.

This morning it was difficult to erase the dings, dents, scratches, gouges and scars from all the repairs it has seen.  While the memories of pine wood derby cars to 17th century antiques will remain in my heart, their evidence is now gone.

Here’s to a fresh start in 2015 and great things to come.

Many thanks to everyone that supports our craft.

Hide Glue

Hide GlueI am often asked “How did you learn about woodworking and furniture restoration?”.

The answer:  I read books, I look at a lot of quality hand made furniture, I practice, and I ask the experts questions.

This book is a great read and can get you started, or sharpen your skills when you are ready to learn about why our ancestors used this glue (and I still do).

Sapwood is not a defect!

Currently working on a stand up writing desk for a client.  I was able to find great Walnut to use for the top.  After removing the bark, and hand planning the band saw tracks from the saw mill I uncovered beautiful off white sapwood.

Utilizing a mitered breadboard technique the sapwood is picture framed as shown below.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

IMG_1241OK, so on special occasions we splurge a little bit and give our daughter Sanpellegrino.  So, when she asked me this past weekend to help her do something with the foil tops she has been collecting,  we decided a small photo frame would look great in her room with one of her favorite pictures from this past summer.

Using some scrap trim from our home renovation project and some glue we created a one of a kind mosaic……..

Cherry Bowl #128

Cherry Bowl #128Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) bowl

This is bowl #128.  The tree was cut down in late 2013 by Middle Tennessee Electric to make room for a new power line.  In the spring of 2014 a bowl blank was rough turned to facilitate drying.  Two weeks ago the bowl was remounted to the lathe, turned to its final shape and size and finished with walnut oil.
